I usually set up our craft station on the kitchen table with newspaper underneath (trust me, you’ll need it!), and we spend an afternoon transforming plain shells into stunning tree decorations.
Start by collecting a variety of shells in different shapes and sizes. Scallop shells work beautifully for angel wings, while smaller clam shells are perfect for simple painted designs. Give all your shells a good wash with warm soapy water and let them dry completely overnight. For a tabletop tree, you’ll need pieces of driftwood in graduating sizes, from longest at the bottom to shortest at the top. I usually collect about 5-7 pieces depending on how tall I want the finished tree. You can either drill holes through the center of each piece and stack them on a wooden dowel, or use a hot glue gun to attach them to a sturdy base in a stacked formation. My boys prefer the glue gun method because it’s faster and they can help arrange the pieces!
Once your basic tree structure is complete, the decorating begins! We love wrapping ours with tiny string lights (battery-operated ones work great), adding miniature starfish between the branches, and tucking in small ornaments. These beach Christmas DIY snow globes are absolutely adorable and so much fun to create! My youngest was fascinated watching the sand and glitter swirl around like an underwater snow storm. Instead of traditional snow, we use fine white sand and iridescent glitter to create a magical seaside scene!
You’ll need clean glass jars with tight-fitting lids (mason jars work perfectly!), waterproof glue or epoxy, distilled water, clear glycerin, fine sand, glitter, and small waterproof decorations. Start by gluing your scene to the inside of the jar lid. We’ve used tiny plastic Christmas trees, small figurines, miniature beach chairs, or even just a beautiful shell arrangement. Make sure everything is securely glued and let it dry completely for at least 24 hours!
Fill your jar almost to the top with distilled water, leaving about an inch of space. Add a tablespoon of clear glycerin (this helps the sand and glitter float more slowly), then add your sand and glitter. I usually do about a teaspoon of fine white sand and a generous pinch of iridescent glitter. You can experiment with the amounts to get the effect you want!
Apply waterproof glue around the rim of the jar, carefully screw on the lid with your scene attached, and turn it upside down. Give it a gentle shake and watch the magic happen! Begin wrapping the rope tightly around the wreath form, securing the end with hot glue. Keep wrapping, adding dabs of glue every few inches to keep everything in place. My boys take turns helping with this part, and it’s actually pretty relaxing once you get into a rhythm!

For this project, you’ll need fishing line or thin wire, collected sea glass pieces, shells with natural holes or drilled holes, and beads in complementary colors. If your shells don’t have holes, you can carefully drill them using a small drill bit (I do this part while the boys are occupied with something else because it requires patience and a steady hand!). Soak shells in water while drilling to prevent cracking.
Start by cutting your fishing line to your desired length, adding extra for tying off the ends. Thread on your sea glass, shells, and beads in a pattern that pleases your eye. I like to alternate between different colors and sizes to create visual interest. Space them about an inch or two apart, tying small knots on either side of each piece to keep them in place. The fishing line is practically invisible, so your treasures look like they’re floating!
For extra Christmas sparkle, add small jingle bells between some of the shells and glass pieces. You can also incorporate small starfish, sand dollars, or even tiny driftwood pieces if you can drill holes through them. We made a version last year with white shells, frosted glass beads, and silver jingle bells that looked absolutely magical draped across our white mantel with twinkle lights behind it. My boys love helping with these because they get to play with sand, which is basically their favorite thing ever!
You’ll need clean glass jars or vases in various sizes, craft sand or real beach sand, mod podge or white glue, paintbrushes, and battery-operated tea lights or small candles. Start by brushing a thick, even layer of mod podge all over the outside of your jar. While it’s still wet, roll the jar in sand, pressing gently to make sure it adheres well. You might need to add more glue and sand to any bare spots. Let it dry completely overnight!
Once dry, you can leave them natural or add decorative touches. We like to hot glue small shells, starfish, or pieces of sea glass around the top rim of the jars. You can also tie nautical rope or twine around the neck of the jar and attach a small tag with a Christmas message. Some of ours have little wooden anchors or ship wheels glued on for extra coastal charm!
Place battery-operated tea lights inside (much safer than real candles, especially with three boys running around!), and arrange your luminaries along your walkway, on porch steps, or as a centerpiece on your dining table. When lit, the sand coating creates such a warm, diffused glow that reminds me of sunset on the beach. We make a whole collection of different sizes and cluster them together for maximum impact. They also make wonderful hostess gifts when you’re invited to holiday parties!
Ocean-Inspired Advent Calendar with Daily Surprises
Creating a beach-themed advent calendar has become one of our favorite December traditions! This beach Christmas DIY project builds so much excitement for the holiday, and my boys race to see who gets to open each day’s surprise. Plus, it looks absolutely adorable displayed in our home and really showcases our love for the ocean!
There are so many ways to create a beach advent calendar! One of our favorites uses small muslin bags or burlap pouches numbered 1-25. We stamp or paint beach-themed designs on each bag (shells, starfish, anchors, waves), fill them with small treats or activity cards, and hang them on a piece of driftwood or nautical rope strung across the wall. You can also use small glass jars filled with sand and topped with numbered cork stoppers, arranging them in a Christmas tree shape on a shelf or table!
For a more elaborate version, collect 25 different shells (or buy them from a craft store if you don’t have enough). Number each shell with a paint pen, and attach small scrolls with daily activities or Bible verses about Christmas. Arrange them in a large glass bowl or wooden tray filled with sand. Each day, the kids search for the correct numbered shell and discover what’s inside. Activities might include things like ‘build a sandcastle,’ ‘watch a Christmas movie,’ ‘make hot chocolate,’ or ‘video call grandma!’
Another fun option is creating a lighthouse advent calendar! Paint a large cardboard cone to look like a red and white striped lighthouse, and attach 25 small numbered doors or flaps around it.
