Hello, my name is Dr. Matt Hammett, and I am a Chiropractor practicing at Kostidis Chiropractic clinic in Valparaiso, Indiana. Chiropractic is a profession that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions, which are caused by mechanical dysfunction of the spinal and extremity joints and their effects on the nervous system. When the bones of your spine are not moving properly, or are out of their normal position, irritation to the nerve or pain in the joints may occur disrupting essential neurological information to the brain. Chiropractic care and the adjustments of the spine restores the proper position and movement the bones and joints within the spinal column and/or extremities; thus restoring proper nerve signal to every tissue, organ, and cell in the body.
I wanted to take a moment and write about Napoleon Hill. Years ago, after I read Think and Grow Rich, I didn't realize how much his philosophy would shape my clinical practice. According to Napoleon Hill, "the mind and body are so closely related that whatever one does affects the other.” Therefore, it may not alarm you that one person out of ten now living in U.S. will have a nervous breakdown. Seventy per cent of all patients who come to physicians could cure themselves if they only got rid of their fears and worries. Don’t think for a moment that I mean that their ills are imaginary; their ills are as real as a throbbing toothache and sometimes a hundred times more serious. I refer to such illnesses as nervous indigestion, some stomach ulcers, heart disturbances, insomnia, some headaches, and some types of paralysis. These illnesses are real.
The other day as I was analyzing a patient, I discovered that her thoughts directly affected the tension in her muscles. This indirectly caused her nervous system to respond in a catastrophic state. She was over analyzing about the possibilities of a tornado that day hitting our town. She was worried about her sixteen year old who might be caught in the storm. As I was analyzing her, each time she thought negatively about the situation, her muscles around her upper back and neck would spasm. This would send shooting pain down her right arm into her hand, causing her to loose strength in her arm. The more negative her thinking, the worse her arm pain heightened. She could not stop herself from thinking about what might lie ahead in the distance; her thinking brought her so much misery that her body was paying the price.
Clearly the cause of her arm pain and fatigue was due to her thinking about what might happen in the distance. If she would only stop and focus what was at hand, she may have heard the radio announce that the storm was passing over. However, because she was pre-occupied with her negative thinking she was stuck in her worry, and her health was paying the price. As Napoleon Hill put it, "you have nothing if you do not have your health and if you think your sick, you are."
